Governor Newsom Welcomes CPMA

On Wednesday, May 15, California Podiatric Medical Association President John Chisholm, DPM; President-Elect Adam Howard, DPM and Executive Director Jon Hultman, DPM, MBA, CVA met with Governor Gavin Newsom in the Office of the Governor in California’s majestic State Capitol Building.  During the visit, the CPMA leaders posthumously presented Governor Newsom the Association’s 2019 Excellence in Education Award, who accepted the award on behalf of his late uncle Paul Scherer, DPM.

Following the award presentation, Dr. Jon Hultman presented the governor a framed picture of Dr. Scherer with himself and Dr. Chisholm at the ProLab USA booth at the 2018 Western Foot and Ankle Conference.  Dr. Scherer would pass away from pancreatic cancer just four months after the picture was taken.  A moved Governor Newsom remarked that his first job was working at his uncle’s orthotic lab.

Dr. Hultman – a friend and classmate of Dr. Scherer’s at the California College of Podiatric Medicine (CCPM) – regaled the Governor, Drs. Chisholm and Howard along with CPMA’s Legislative Counsel Mr. Ryan Spencer with stories of Dr. Scherer.  The group also discussed the critical need to increase access to quality, affordable care for the people of California, especially the underprivileged and underserved.  President Chisholm stated that his Chula Vista, CA office served a sizeable Medi-Cal population, but faced numerous challenges in doing so. Mr. Spencer noted that CPMA is currently working to improve the Medi-Cal patient population’s access to podiatric medical services, which can greatly reduce the amputation rate and associated costs in California.

“It was a great meeting,” said President-Elect Howard. “The governor was gracious and gregarious; and most appreciative of CPMA honoring Dr. Scherer with its Excellence in Education Award and hearing stories about his uncle that he had never heard before.”
